Tune into Jaded’s tribute to composer James Horner on FRISKY CHILL
James Horner has created some of the most memorable film scores of the last 30+ years, known for his integration of choral and electronic elements that bring movies to life. Playing the piano since he was 5, his love for music continued throughout his adolescence and into his adulthood, as he attended multiple universities and began scoring for the American Film Institute. His breakthrough came in 1982 when he was hired to score Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a project that established him as a mainstream composer. He continued to write for high-profile releases including 48Hrs, Commando, Cocoon, Aliens, Willow, and Field of Dreams. In 1987 he was nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Original Score for Aliens, and Best Original Song for “Somewhere Out There” from American Tail.
His success as a composer continued for generations, and in the 90’s he received much acclaim and further Academy Award nominations for Braveheart and Apollo 13, and his greatest financial and critical success came in 1997 with Titanic. Selling over 27 million copies worldwide and winning him two Oscars for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song (“My Heart Will Go On”), his work on Titanic cemented his place in the film history.
“My job is to make sure at every turn of the film it’s something the audience can feel with their heart.” – James Horner
On June 22nd, 2015 James Horner was killed in an accident while he was flying his S312 Tucano turboprop aircraft in the Los Padres National Forest in California. The loss of such a long standing staple of the film and music world was felt by all those who had been effected by the stories that his scores had told, but the impact he made through these epic musical compositions will continue to live on forever.
