Our Underground Electronic Music Community: A Reflection

Lauren Krieger

What the underground electronic music community has is unique.

Never did I feel this stronger than at ADE, when I got to meet and speak to so many people face to face, and truly feel that connection that has us interwoven in indescribable ways. I will catch up with a full recap of the events soon, but wanted to take this moment, with my own little soap box, to say how grateful I am to be a part of something so special.

To those who met with me, shared their stories and listened to mine, it meant and felt like the world to me. I’m going to make an assumption that many of you are similar; this music is your world and relating to others outside of it is missing a connection with the thing that is deepest in your soul. For me, I’ve always been a bit of an outsider, never quite feeling like I fit in with the rest of the crowd. When I first discovered this music, I felt like I was coming home to a place where I belonged, just by listening to it. To connect so honestly and lovingly with those who feel the same is like discovering your long lost family, one who has been spread throughout the planet, listening to the same stories and following the same journeys on their own. I feel as if I cannot thank you enough, for joining me on the dance floor, for the hugs, and warmth, and happy conversations that I wished would never end.

I know there are a lot of you out there who feel the same, those for whom the music makes you feel alive. Coming from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and experiences, our community is an example that the rest of the world should be learning from. A subject that could take many, many more words, I offer some quick thoughts:

Living in the Moment: The very nature of the DJ experience is to be completely in the moment, to be doing what you are doing when you are doing it – listening, dancing, creating or enjoying music, requires a presence that eliminates distraction. The power of life is found when fully present in the moment, and this music brings us as one, into the now.

Flowing: Life is flow and change is constant, no other music exemplifies this as great as underground electronic music, its effectiveness coming from the ability to transition through seamless rhythms and journeys while bringing listeners along for the ride. We are always encountering waves in all aspects of life, so to be able to ride along the same flow with the same energies, unites and empowers us together.

True Self Expression: For music to be felt in our soul, for it to really touch us, means it has to come from the open heart of its creator. In the case of electronic music, we often have multiple artists working together, each putting a piece of their self into their work. To communicate effectively in electronic sounds requires an honesty and openness that is not easy to do, but when done right the expression makes a lasting impact on all involved.

Universal Connection: On the dance floor, across the world, when we connect with the music we connect with each other. This music has always transcended borders, it is created through the cooperation of artists who have never met, and travels around the world to bring their sound to every corner of the planet. When we are lost in the music together, when we meet heart to heart through the sounds that make us feel alive, when we realize what matters is the universal thread that unites us, and when that rhythm hits just right, all disconnect is dissolved.

Life is not easy nor simple, we all struggle and meet challenges that test us. When we look outside, we see turmoil, hate, and fear. But we must never underestimate the power of love, and consistently draw our attention to it as often as we can. If every day, from wherever we are, we keep listening and creating the music that drives that energy within us, we will continue to make this world a better place, together.

Thank you to you all, for being who are you, and for doing what you love.
