Driven to share the music which moves him, Satish K has been spreading his sound through Singapore and beyond.
Recognized for his deep and dreamy progressive, Satish K brings an open and welcoming vibe to his DJ sets, which has organically grown his career to gain continuous support from fans and peers alike. His FRISKY Artist of the Week and FRISKY Loves Singapore guest mixes have reached over 18K people, introducing his soul filled style to an even wider global audience.
Wanting to bring even more music to the Singapore scene and beyond, he teamed up with partner Mellisa Tan to form Play By Ear, a brand which hosts special events that stand out among the rest. Not satisfied with producing your average show, they aim to create memorable moments through a shared passion for sound, a vision for the exceptional, and a mission to spread the pure love of the music.
Now he’s bringing that philosophy to the rest of the world through his new FRISKY show. Play By Ear will be premiering on June 27th @ 9AM EST / 9PM SGT [convert timezone] and will be available to listen to On-Demand anytime after.
What do you enjoy most about being a DJ?
I believe music has got the ability to make or break a moment. Born and bred in a multi cultural environment in Chennai, India, enchanting melodies and percussive rhythms were a part of my upbringing. When I got introduced to electronic music, especially progressive, I realised the influence it had, in changing perspective towards life situations. By being able to play music that affects my soul, I am able to put my happy soul on display, which I believe could have a positive effect on to my listeners.
What has been one of the highlights of your career?
a. Being able to start Play By Ear projects in Singapore
b. Being invited to host my own show at Frisky
Who were some of your early music influences, and who do you love to listen to today?
My musical journey unknowingly started when I was may be 6/7 yrs old, when I used to listen to my dad play Boney M on vinyls on his fav Sony Cassette & Vinyl player. By the time I started my own collection, it was all about Hip hop, RnB & Rap. DMX, Tupac, Eminem,Timberland filled my folders. I also remember owning a Bryan Adams ‘Best of Me’ Cassette which I ended up breaking and getting a earful from my dad. My experience with electronic music started with Trance. I was a huge fan of Jaytech, Above & beyond, Ferry Corsten and used to religiously listen to all their podcasts and discover other great artists and sounds.
I think in all walks of my life, I’ve been experiencing different sounds and moving across genres, to may be, find the sound which resonates with me, and that happened when I came across EL Mastero – Hernan Cattaneo and the underground progressive sounds. Hernan definitely plays a vital role in shaping my musical career to what it is right now. I still look out for new sounds and artists that make an impact on me, and who knows what I will stumble upon next.
I’d love to hear more about “Play by Ear”. How did that first get started, and what’s it all about?
‘Play by Ear’ started due to two people, Mellisa Tan and myself, who had passion for quality music and take partying very seriously. We host parties in and around Singapore in new and different locations that we stumble upon during our casual strolls around the country. We are not the regular event organisers who set up a pair of speakers and decks and have a few DJ’s playing the crowd, but we rather aim to bring an experience to people who come for our parties.
How is the current Singapore Underground scene?
The current Singapore underground scene is really good compared to what it was 4/5 yrs back. The way I see it, you have 2 or 3 good events to attend to on a weekend with each event hosting a top International artist across house & techno genres
What are some of your future plans for yourself and “Play by Ear”?
We simply play by ear.
