Ryan Sullivan’s sophisticated style and experienced engineering comes through on his always excellent show Triplefire. His productions and DJ mixes are created with unique flavor and finely tuned atmospheres. I loved learning about his day to day life in South Africa, and wanted to catch up again to learn more about what makes him tick.
If your life were a game, what would it be called?
Odd One Out!
I almost always feel like I’m the only one that experiences the world in my particular way. My ideas and ideals are often not on par with other peoples. I don’t know why that is but it’s taught me to put my head down and do my thing, regardless of other peoples impressions.
If you could travel through time, when & where would you go to?
I would love to go back to my teenage years with the knowledge I have now. I think that’s quite an obvious response though. There’s still so much I want to see in the world right now that I can’t think of another era to want to see. Perhaps the early years of the rave scene would be amazing to witness.
What do you like to listen to, besides music?
Silence is pretty awesome! That might sound silly but it’s so seldom that I’m in complete silence. There’s always some kind of sound in the background so I guess my favorite background sound would be a running stream or river. It’s tranquil and makes me feel connected and safe.
What’s your favorite kind of tree?
The baobab. They’re these huge trees found across Africa and I believe they’re in India and Australia too. They majestic and look like they’re upside down as the branches look more like roots. Google them, they have gigantic trunks and people even carve them into homes!
Coffee or Tea?
Tea for sure. I’m super sensitive to caffeine so I’ll only have coffee if I know I have a serious night ahead of me. Tea on the other hand is something I can enjoy at any time. We get this real tasty tea called rooibos here in South Africa, I drink a fair amount of that and it’s perfect with a squeeze of lemon and some honey.
