Featuring exclusive mixes from their growing repertoire of resident and guest DJs, circle. Ibiza expands to FRISKY.
It’s off season in Ibiza and Pete Bidwell is enjoying the chance to reflect on circle. Ibiza’s successful Summer sessions, while gearing up to continue expanding the brand’s impact not only within the competitive market of the island, but across the world through live streams, pop up events, and a radio show. The radio show is where the circle. concept first began years ago, and in fitting fashion, its 200th episode will be airing when it joins its new home at FRISKY.
Since the first set he played at a party in 2002, Pete Bidwell has been hooked on DJing, traveling the world to bring his sound to crowds from Austria to Australia, while representing in his home town of London at venues like Heaven, McQueen, Ministry of Sound, and Pacha. Since 2012 he’s been a resident in Ibiza, where his eclectic mixes that range from balearic to techno, have had him warming up for artists like Audiofly, Guti and tINI and at places including Café Mambo, Sushi Mambo and more. [Listen to his Pro-B-Tech Guest Mix].
His passion for sharing unexplored tracks drove him to create his weekly radio show, where he’d feature promos and guests who aligned with his love for a wide range of underground electronic music. Combining this love with a desire to share more of his discoveries with Ibiza’s audience, Pete began to brainstorm on ideas for doing local events that would offer something special. It was 2 years ago when his first circle. event began, born from the minds of a dedicated team who used the Ibiza Winter to start networking, pitching to venues and spreading the word through other events. With so much competition in Ibiza he has found it to be a challenging task, but the close-knit team’s clandestine approach has helped grow the brand’s recognition on the island and beyond.
Their hard work has paid off, as circle. Ibiza events have become mainstays at the Sky Bar at Hotel MiM Ibiza Es Vivé and OD Ocean Drive, and their own circle. Ibiza Studios, where they have been the host for many memorable evenings of deep electronic music. DJs like Just Her, Luke Brancaccio and Nick Muir and have graced their decks, with their live streams spreading the cirlce. Ibiza sound to a wider audience all around the world. The support from the community has been wonderful, with global DJs interested in being a part of the ever-growing, passionate energy of circle.’s dedicated team.
Transmitting this energy to the radio waves, the circle. Ibiza show on FRISKY will be featuring exclusive mixes from the guest DJs who play at their events throughout the year. Catch their set live streamed via circle.’s Facebook page, and then stay tuned for a mix created especially for their show on FRISKY. The resident DJs may also be making occasional appearances, with Pete Bidwell himself dropping in for special occasions. As the creator of circle., and long time radio show host, I wanted to learn more about Pete’s own perspective as a DJ. What is the music that moves him? What is his personal DJ philosophy?
“Anything from deep and progressive house a little bit of dubby, melodic techno, everything in between. All on the underground side. Smaller labels, I prefer, because they like the exposure. I understand where I am in this industry, where I sit. You know, when you go see some of the big names, obviously they’re all trying to play promos stuff that’s pre-released because they don’t want their sets to be shazamed, but they’re all playing tracks that are probably going to come out on their big labels or they’re contacted by the big labels. Because of the promos I get sent, I use what I’ve got and I find little gems from the music that I get sent. Everything that goes out on my radio show is 99.9% of the time an original mix. I download the promo, and then when I go to play out at a circle. event I’ve got lots of lovely surprises. And I don’t plan any sets, I just go through, see what I’ve got, and do it on the fly on the night. I just play forthcoming pre-releases and sometimes slip in an old track or two.”
It’s this sharing of the best of the underground, the rawness of the music and connection with the community which drives circle. Ibiza, and what brings listeners and viewers into its ever expanding world. Pete Bidwell is excited about what the future holds, with plans for some big guests DJs, a Winter with monthly events already on the books, and what will surely be lots of lovely surprises.
