Envision this: you’re an astronaut blasting off into space … Mission: The Moon! All the while, the only music playing on a loop is from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterpiece – 2001 A Space Odyssey. You’re thinking to yourself; “wow if only there were more music tunes to listen to helping pass time and having all the feel goods of home.”
Not to fear for #MoonTunes is here!
As celebrations mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, NASA is preparing yet another mission to the moon by 2024. As any of us know all too well – having music on a trip to help pass time makes it all better! Thus, to prepare for NASA’s return moon mission, they’re asking the public to help curate a playlist for the astronaut’s listening pleasures.
Starting June 3rd thru June 28, NASA is taking suggestions to help curate the #MoonTunes playlist. In addition, it will air on NASA’s Third Rock Radio July 13th and 14th.
The question all comes down to: if you were traveling 3 days each way, what out of this world tracks would you have on your playlist?
The rules are simple as put forth from NASA:
- Songs with explicit titles, lyrics and themes will not be accepted for addition to the playlist. NASA is for everyone – let’s make sure the playlist is too.
- Only songs published on official music streaming services at the time of the acceptance period will be added to the playlist. A user may not submit song lyrics or unpublished music from sites such as SoundCloud, YouTube, Bandcamp, MixCloud or other user-uploaded content websites.
- Only songs with the hashtag #NASAMoonTunes on Twitter and submissions via the form on website (see below link) will be accepted.
- Third Rock Radio has the flexibility to select which songs will air from the proposed list. There is no requirement or obligation to play any specific song from the playlist, and there is no guarantee that each song submitted will be aired live. Want to know if your submission made the cut? Don’t miss the live show!
We can make history and help commemorate this new historic milestone with track tune ideas the entire galaxy would enjoy. So, let’s all join in by giving the astronauts a fun filled galactic blast rocking out to tunes only “the third rock from the sun” knows how.
