Directed by Darren Emerson, Detone Sessions will feature DJs who are influencing the evolution of the underground.
A leading force in the underground for over 30 years, Darren Emerson’s influence on the destiny of electronic music cannot be overstated. His innovative work with Underworld introduced an unexpected new sound to the world, breaking the boundaries of what musicians could do. With his creative approach setting the bar high for the production of electronic music, Darren helped Underworld reach great commercial success and a place in music history. At this time he also founded his label Underwater, which became one of the most influential imprints of the 90’s.
Known for his discerning yet expansive taste, Darren’s work as a DJ reflects those qualities which made him a sought after remixer and artist. His dance inducing funky yet edgy techno blend has been featured three times on the legendary Global Underground series, with GU015 Uruguay (2000), GU020 Singapore (2001), and GU036 Bogota (2009) showcasing his eclectic, effective style. Of course this style was sought after around the world, and his three decades of traversing the planet have led to innumerable memorable moments on the dance floor.
Even through all of his experiences and the effort he has put into shaping the music scene, Darren Emerson still keeps the energy going, remaining at the forefront of what’s fresh in the underground. Whether it’s touring and producing alongside Dave Seaman and Danny Howells with 3D DJs, or managing his prominent label Detone Records, Darren continues to be a driving force for the music.
His work with Detone Records is what brings him to FRISKY, with the launch of Detone Sessions, a show that will feature mixes from DJs and producers who are making their own vital impact on the scene. Catch the premiere on September 28th @ 9AM EST [convert timezone] or listen anytime / anywhere after with a FRISKY Premium Subscription & FRISKY Mobile Apps.

What is currently new & exciting in your world?
Just came back from playing a couple of shows in Bali, which were amazing! Now the summer madness has calmed down a bit, I’m back in the studio working on some new material.
I hear there is a new album on the horizon, could you share some details about the project?
I’ve just completed a DJ mix comp for my Detone label. The title is EVOLVE and I’ll be doing one of these quarterly. The first one features some old bits plus some new stuff, so it showcases some of the label’s best moments.
It seems like you, Dave Seaman, and Danny Howells are having a great time as 3D DJs. What have you enjoyed most about your experience so far? Do you have any highlight moments?
It’s always good fun with Dave and Dan man. We’ve had a cracking summer and played some cool festivals plus done some great tours in US and South America. The Argentina leg was the highlight for me because every gig was amazing. Those crowds really know how to party!
Where is your favourite place to play lately? Do you have an all-time favourite venue?
It’s hard to choose an all-time favourite after 30 years of DJing in the world’s best clubs, but THE BOW in Argentina was pretty amazing recently.
Do you think there anything that you experienced at the beginning of your career, which DJs who are starting out today might be missing out on?
There were no sync buttons back then and mixing was a proper artform, so I’m pleased my skills took me through the ranks. Turntabilism and beat mixing doesn’t seem to count for so much these days but it’s something I still try to do.
What do you think is the most important thing to for aspiring DJs / Producers to do in order to be successful in today’s industry?
1) Follow your heart
2) Keep it real
3) Produce music that is fresh
4) Don’t go up your own arse
5) Be kind to everyone.
What gets you excited about the state of the music right now?
All the choice that’s out there. I love everything from jazz to alternative, so Spotify is great and really gives me loads of inspiration, because it introduces me to loads of music I wouldn’t normally get to hear.
What is your mission with Detone Records?
To keep doing what I’ve always done with my labels: put good material out, look after my team of artists/producers and make it a family.
What can listeners expect to hear on your FRISKY show?
Some great mixes from my sets around the world and amazing guest producers and DJ’s
